MS Ocean Endeavour, a Dmitry Shostakovich-class ferry cruise ship has made its inaugural call to Gibraltar on Thursday May 5th 2016.

Built in a Polish shipyard in 1981, the vessel has been part of the Fleet Pro Passenger cruise firm since 2014. It has a gross tonnage of 12,907 tonnes, a length of 137.6 metres, capacity for 450 passengers and a crew of 100.

Govt have announced the publication of a Bill that will commence the process of reform of the Industrial Tribunal; to be known as the Employment Tribunal. The substantive review introduces new subsidiary legislation and accompanying updates to the Employment Act. The new rules will regulate the constitution and procedure applicable to the Employment Tribunal, the fees payable to mediators and the calculation of compensation, as well as extending the type of cases that will be heard before the Employment Tribunal. The secondary legislation will be enacted once the Bill amending the Employment Act is debated and passed in Parliament.

Two Government ministers have been awarded Honorary Doctorates by the Kingston University and St George’s, University of London. In different ceremonies, the Hon John Cortes and the Hon Gilbert Licudi were awarded Hon DUniv (Honorary Doctor of the University) degrees.

Commissioner of Police Eddie Yome, in his capacity as President of the European Association of Airport & Seaport Police (EAASP), last week chaired the EAASP’s annual conference in Bruges, Belgium. Gibraltar was also represented at this event by senior officials from HM Customs, Borders and Coastguard Agency and the Gibraltar Port Authority.

The Gibraltar Financial Services Commission have announced the appointment of Mr Peter Taylor to the position of Director of Legal, Enforcement and Policy. Peter is an experienced regulatory lawyer and will bring a wealth of expertise to the GFSC. He has a strong background in litigation and regulatory law and practice. His legal career spans 3 decades, first establishing himself as a litigator at Denton Wilde Sapte where he spent 8 years, becoming a partner in 1994.

A recent gathering of five sisters and five brothers to celebrate Nora’s 60th Birthday was transformed by this family clan into an opportunity to support a very worthy cause. Their chosen charity was Clubhouse Gibraltar who are providing an excellent service in empowering individuals who have experienced mental illness to recover and develop to their full potential.

Instead of birthday presents family and friends were asked to make donations to this chosen charity. The birthday celebrations were held at a private party in Waterfront Restaurant full of love, fun, laughs and dancing. An impressive family gathering, where many of the family had travelled from abroad especially for the occasion. All attending were asked to wear funny hats and there was an impressive array of all shapes and sizes which added to the party’s unique and jovial atmosphere.

Monarch Airlines last Sunday launched its new service from London Gatwick to Gibraltar.

Operating four times per week on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, this new service becomes the fourth UK destination served by the airline, joining London Luton, Manchester and Birmingham. The Gatwick service will be operated by the airline’s 174 seat Airbus A320 fleet.

The Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia has accused the Spanish Government of behaving in a cavalier and irresponsible manner in the waters around Gibraltar in a way which endangers the wider interests of the Western World. Dr Garcia made these comments in an event in Washington organised by the Heritage Foundation.

The Government of Gibraltar congratulates the Gibraltar Football Association for its success in its action against FIFA in the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

FIFA has been ordered to admit the GFA immediately.

This was one of various engagements with twenty Congressional offices in a busy schedule over a two and a half day visit.

German cruise ship Mein Schiff 3 will be making its inaugural visit to Gibraltar on Monday May 2 2016. The vessel is part of the German TUI Cruises fleet, which is a joint venture operation with the American firm Royal Caribbean Cruises. 

The Gibraltar Financial Services Commission have issued a statement announcing the publication of a suite of documents detailing developments in its regulatory approach as well as its business plan and outlook for the next 12 months.

The Minister for Education, Gilbert Licudi, QC has congratulated the Bayside team on behalf of HM Government of Gibraltar. After reaching the finals, the team from Bayside School beat teams from schools across the UK at a gruelling contest held at The National Museum of Computing in Bletchley Park, UK.

The Deputy CM Dr Joseph Garcia is in Washington for a series of meetings with members of Congress and others on Capitol Hill. This follows the very successful visit to Gibraltar by a Congressional delegation in February.
