On Saturday the 16th April the Gibraltar Health Authority will be holding the annual, skin cancer screening day, at the Primary Care Centre.
This event, now in its third consecutive year, provides a unique opportunity for the public to have any notable skin changes checked out by the Dermatology team and with both of the visiting consultant dermatologists available for confirmation of diagnostics on the day.
Skin cancer screening days are held throughout different countries on an annual basis and this initiative continuous to be supported by the minister to help raise awareness of skin cancer due to sun exposure. It also serves as a platform to increase public education.
The screening day marks the launch of the annual Sun Awareness campaign, which is also aimed at raising public awareness on the dangers of over exposure whilst re-enforcing the measures that can be taken to ensure maximum protection.
In Gibraltar we already have a substantial number of skin cancers that are managed by the dermatology department and the surgeons in the hospital and it is imperative that we do all we can to reduce future incidences. The importance of protecting ourselves from sun exposure cannot be over emphasised.
On Saturday 16th of April concerned members of the public should turn up at the Primary Care Centre via the main entrance between 9am and 11.30am and 2pm and 4.30pm where they can have these changes examined by a professional. No appointment is required.
This initiative is aimed at looking at significant skin changes which could indicate skin cancer. It is not for examination of chronic skin conditions.
