The Ministry for Heritage is pleased to announce the completion of a programme of vegetation clearance and cleaning works at the Gatehouse of the Moorish Castle Complex.

The works have involved the careful removal of invasive vegetation, shrubs, saplings and other plant growth from the historic structure. Left unchecked, such growth can accelerate the deterioration of historic masonry by trapping moisture, dislodging mortar, widening existing cracks and causing longterm structural damage.

The clearance forms part of the Ministry's ongoing programme of preventative conservation and maintenance across Gibraltar's historic monuments and heritage assets. It also complements the substantial conservation and cleaning works already undertaken at the Tower of Homage and the Inner Keep, where efforts have focused on improving the condition, presentation and accessibility of one of Gibraltar's most important historic sites.

The Gatehouse is an important component of the wider Moorish Castle Complex and, like many historic structures, requires periodic intervention to manage vegetation and minimise avoidable deterioration. The works have significantly improved both the appearance and condition of the monument whilst allowing architectural features that had become obscured by vegetation to once again be appreciated.

The Ministry remains committed to ensuring that Gibraltar's heritage assets are properly maintained and conserved for future generations, whilst also enhancing the visitor experience and public appreciation of the Rock's rich history.

By investing in our built heritage, we help ensure that these remarkable monuments can be enjoyed by future generations while continuing to tell Gibraltar's unique story.”
