Local Football Club Gibraltar Utd, last week travelled to Manchester, UK, with 5 of their youth teams to take part in the highly acclaimed Easter International Football Tournament, the Manchester Cup.
The tournament, organised by Team Tours Direct, attracts clubs from all over the world, all with high hopes of performing in front of English Premier League Scouts.
Set at Wythenshawe Sports Ground, which is part of the University of Manchester, and boasting 26 full size football pitches, the matches were played simultaneously over the weekend of Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st April, under beautiful clear blue skies.
Players from the 5 teams, U6, U7, U8, U11 and U12 were not fazed by the heat wave that was enveloping Manchester this week. With plenty of hard work, determination and strong support from all the parents and families that travelled from Gibraltar and the UK, and together with their highly dedicated coaches, they managed to achieve very good results all round.
Competing in the U7 Age Group were the Under 6's and Under 7's. The U6's won the Round Robin Trophy and the U7's won the Challenge Cup. The U8's also won the Challenge Cup in their age group.
The U11's finished 4th in their group and the Under 12 lost on penalties in the semi final of the Winners Cup but went on to beat Port Vale Academy 2-0 in the Third Place play-off.
An outstanding performance from our youth, playing teams that feature players from prestigious Premier League and Championship Academies, such as West Brom, Birmingham, Aston Villa. Considering the level of talent on show, Gibraltar Utd, across all its age groups, competed with the best, achieving great performances and admirable results.
