Students at Gibraltar College were recently treated to a talk on the complexities of national emergency planning, bridging the gap between classroom theory and real-world application.
As part of the Level 3 Health & Social Care curriculum, Year 12 and adult learners from the Care Agency welcomed Lieutenant Colonel (Retd) Ivor Lopez MBE, Civil Contingencies Coordinator. The session was specifically designed to help the learners navigate the Legislation and Civil Contingencies modules, which are critical units for their upcoming examination.
The initiative was led by co-teachers Mrs. Gauci and Mrs. Santos, who work in unison to manage the large cohort of 80 students. By bringing in a leading figure in Gibraltar's infrastructure, the teaching team provided a perspective that moved beyond the textbook.
"We believe that learning shouldn't stop at the classroom door," the teaching team noted. "Having Mr. Lopez share his expertise allows our learners to see exactly how the legislation they study impacts real-world safety and care. We are very grateful that he could join us to help bring these complex theories to life."
During the presentation, Mr. Lopez provided a detailed breakdown of statutory frameworks and Major Incident protocols. The session proved highly impactful for both the full-time learners and the adult professionals from the Care Agency, who were described by their teachers as an exceptionally receptive and engaged audience.
This opportunity served as a vital enrichment of their curriculum, offering a powerful example of experiential learning. By witnessing theory in action through such a high-level post, the learners have gained the professional context and deeper insight necessary to tackle their final Year 12 exam, taking place in just three weeks' time.
Principal of Gibraltar College, Daniel Benrimoj, stated: "We are very grateful to Mr. Lopez for giving so generously of his time and sharing his invaluable expertise. His presence turned a complex syllabus module into a vivid, real-world lesson. Gibraltar College appreciates the rare opportunity he provided to our learners during such a critical point in their studies."
The Minister for Education, the Hon Prof. John Cortes, added: "It is excellent to see such high-level collaboration between our public services and our educational institutions. Providing students with direct access to the individuals who shape Gibraltar's response to major incidents is the gold standard of enrichment. This ensures our learners are not just exam ready, but industry ready, equipped with a practical understanding of the frameworks that keep our community safe."
