Finalists from the St Joseph’s Lower Primary School Year 2 cohort were delighted to attend the Spring Flower Show Awards Presentation, held at The Convent on the evening of 14th April 2026. The event proved to be a memorable occasion, celebrating creativity, sustainability, and community spirit.
As part of the Spring Flower Show Horticultural Society School Competition, Year 2 pupils were challenged to create a decorative display using a paper plate as their canvas, incorporating fresh or dried natural materials. Our pupils worked with dried seeds and beans, producing intricate and imaginative designs.
We are proud to announce that two of our pupils received top awards:
• Niamh Tosso was awarded 2nd Prize
• Celine Galliano Hosken was awarded 3rd Prize
Their creations reflected not only artistic skill but also their learning from last term’s African studies topic, where they explored patterns, textures, and cultural designs.
In addition to these individual achievements, our school celebrated further success in the newly introduced Urban Oasis Award. Our entry was shortlisted to the final five and, following a live announcement in the evening, we were thrilled to be awarded 2nd Prize.
This project began in September as a collaboration between the Gardening Club and Year 2 pupils. Together, they identified an underused balcony space within the school and transformed it into a vibrant green oasis. The project included:
• Painting a colourful mural
• Planting courgettes, peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, beans, and sunflowers
• Creating an enchanted fairy garden
• Upcycling old garden furniture astroturf and tyres
Through creativity and teamwork, the children successfully turned an urban space into a living work of art.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Mr Brownbridge from Greenarc for his kind donation of flowers and plants, which played an important role in bringing the project to life.
The evening at The Convent was a wonderful celebration of the children’s hard work and dedication, and we are incredibly proud of all they have achieved.
The winning entries, along with all the fantastic creations from our Year 2 pupils, were displayed at the John Mackintosh Hall throughout the week.
