The annual Mini-Olympiad for children will be held on Saturday 14th October, between 10am and 4pm at the Victoria Stadium Complex. The event is organised by the Royal Gibraltar Police as part of its wider drugs misuse awareness work within the community, and under the banner of “Live Life, Love Sport”.

The event is aimed at children of School Years 4-7, who are divided into a variety of sporting activities overseen by volunteers from local sporting associations working alongside RGP liaison officers. RGP School Liaison officers have also embarked in the process of registering participating children through their respective schools.

The event is being sponsored by GibOil Ltd and Argus Insurance and will be supported on the day by HM Government of Gibraltar and the Gibraltar Sports & Leisure Authority.

Children should congregate under their respective Sport Banners as from 9am at John Mackintosh Square. The Mayor, her Worship Kaiane Aldorino Lopez will give a short address to the participants prior to their parade down Main Street which will be ed by the Band of the Gibraltar Sea Scouts and the Gibraltar Re-enactment Association. The parade will head north along Main Street, Market Place, Waterport and Glacis Road, entering Bayside Road towards the Victoria Stadium complex.

A short opening ceremony will take place at the main pitch that will include an opening address by the Hon Steven Linares, Minister for Culture, Media and the Youth. Following the opening ceremony the children will break up into the respective sports/activities they will be participating in throughout the day.

In addition to the sporting activities there will be entertainment provided by Danza Academy, a Radio Gibraltar roadshow and music by DJ Alan Arnold. There will also be a display by the RGP Dog Section, Bouncy Castles and Mini Go-Karts for children and several local charities manning stalls within the Multi-Use Games Area.

There will also be the traditional boat rides onboard RGP & HM Customs vessels. These will be taking place from the water sports pontoon at the complex and will be free for children participating in the Mini Olympiad. A food and snack kiosk manned by RGP volunteers will also be available by kind permission of Victoria Stadium Bar.

The day’s events will be brought to a close with the traditional Special Olympics Gibraltar v RGP football match on the main pitch.

As always, all proceeds of this event, together with monies raised at last Saturday’s RGP Cycling Marathon held at Casemates Square will be distributed amongst the GBC open day and local charities by the RGP Charity Committee.
