Three More Literary Events added to the Gibunco Gibraltar Literary Festival

Gibraltar Cultural Services on behalf of the Ministries of Tourism and Culture, is delighted to announce three additional events as part of the Gibraltar Gibunco Literary Festival. All three events will take place at the Garrison Library on Tuesday 10th November, offering audiences the opportunity to explore Gibraltar's wartime history, culinary heritage and personal memories of life on the Rock.

The first is Richard Garcia's Useless Mouths; Gibraltarians at War lecture. Following from his original sell-out event, which reflects the strong public interest in Gibraltar's history and stories, a morning session has been added at 10am. The public can buy tickets for this session, where Richard will focus on his latest research into the impact of the Second World War on Gibraltar's civilian population and the lasting effects the conflict had on the community. Drawing from his forthcoming work, Garcia explores the preparations for war, evacuation, and the experiences of Gibraltarians during one of the most significant periods in the Rock's history.

Nhean Haynes de Domecq will be in conversation with Dr Jennifer Ballantine Perera, at 12 noon. The author who is passionate about cooking will discuss Rock Cakes and Other Delights, a fascinating collection of recipes and family stories spanning more than a century. Inspired by notebooks preserved through generations of the Saccone family, starting with her great-great great grandmother, the book combines culinary history with a unique insight into the lives of one of Gibraltar's prominent mercantile families.

Richenda Power will be in conversation with Dr Jennifer Ballantine Perera at 2pm. The author and poet who spent her childhood in Gibraltar between 1956 and 1960, returns to the Rock with The Clown and the Dancer, a captivating work inspired by her parents’ letters from Gibraltar. Blending family history, memoir, poetry and social observation, the manuscript brings to life a fascinating post-war Gibraltar. She will share the contrasting voices of her mother, a theatrical dancer, embracing local culture and her father, a welfare officer, navigating life on the Rock, during a transformative period.

These events provide an opportunity for audiences to engage with authors whose work celebrate Gibraltar's history, heritage and community through research, family stories and personal experience.
