Ministry of Justice Continues Private Sector Sanctions Training Programme

The Ministry of Justice held a sanctions training session for the private sector on Tuesday 3 November 2026. The session was delivered by external consultants XReg as part of the Ministry’s wider programme of sanctions awareness, training and preparedness.

The session was opened by Marie Mifsud, Head of the Ministry of Justice.

The training focused on the practical sanctions obligations businesses may face. It covered Gibraltar’s sanctions framework and its interaction with United Nations, United Kingdom and European Union sanctions regimes, as well as screening, customer due diligence, ongoing monitoring, ownership and control, asset freezes, reporting obligations, licensing and cross-border transactions.

The session was attended mainly by representatives from the financial services sector, together with legal professionals. It provided an opportunity to consider how firms can identify and escalate potential sanctions issues, maintain appropriate records and respond to sanctions risks.

The training also supports Gibraltar’s ongoing MONEYVAL preparations and the Government’s wider commitment to maintaining effective sanctions arrangements. Further sessions are scheduled for 4, 9 and 17 November.

The Minister for Justice, Trade and Industry, the Hon Nigel Feetham KC MP, said:

“Sanctions obligations extend across a wide range of businesses and professions. It is important that those operating within Gibraltar understand both the legal framework and what is expected of them in practice.

“This training provides practical guidance on issues firms may encounter, including screening, ownership structures, reporting, licensing and cross-border transactions. Effective implementation depends on cooperation between Government, regulators, law enforcement and industry.

“The sessions support our wider programme to maintain sanctions awareness and training, as well as Gibraltar’s continuing MONEYVAL preparations. I am grateful to XReg for delivering the training and to all those who took part.”
