New Lighting Brings Gibraltar’s Historic Castle Walls to Life as Northern Defences Works Progress
The Ministry for Heritage is pleased to announce further progress in the transformation of Gibraltar’s historic northern fortifications, with new architectural uplighting of the Moorish Castle walls forming a striking new feature of Gibraltar’s night-time landscape.
The lighting forms part of the wider programme of works centred on the Moorish Castle and Northern Defences and follows the recent inauguration of the restored and interpreted Tower of Homage and the ‘Dungeon Experience’. The Tower opened to the public on 14 September as the first attraction delivered under the Government’s wider history vision, which will bring together Gibraltar’s Moorish, Spanish and British stories through some of its most important historic sites.

Lighting the Castle Walls
The architectural lighting has been designed to reveal the form, texture and scale of the historic castle walls after dark, allowing the fortifications to remain a prominent landmark within Gibraltar’s night-time skyline without requiring intrusive additions to the historic fabric. The system also provides flexibility to illuminate the monument for important commemorative and community occasions.
The lighting represents more than an aesthetic intervention. It forms part of the wider approach to reconnecting the Moorish Castle with the historic defensive landscape extending northwards towards the Northern Defences and Landport.
During the National Celebrations period, the Castle was illuminated in Gibraltar’s red and white, continuing the established tradition of marking National Day and demonstrating the potential of the new system. Since then it has been lit in various different colours in support of other events or charities.
Minister for Heritage, Professor John Cortes, said:
“The Moorish Castle and Northern Defences are among Gibraltar’s most important heritage assets, and it is tremendously exciting to see this historic landscape progressively being revealed and given new life.
“The illumination of the Castle walls allows one of our most recognisable monuments to take its rightful place in Gibraltar’s skyline after dark, while the work taking place beyond it in the Northern Defences is opening up an extraordinary part of our history.
“This is about conservation, but it is equally about education, research, accessibility and enjoyment. By bringing these sites together, we are creating something of which residents can be proud and which will offer visitors a much deeper understanding of Gibraltar and the many centuries of history contained within our fortifications.”
