The Minister for Justice, Trade and Industry, Nigel Feetham KC MP, this week attended the Bitso Stablecoin Conference in Mexico City where he had the opportunity to speak as part of the Government’s ongoing programme of international engagement.

These engagements are an important part of Gibraltar’s strategy to strengthen and diversify our economy and to continue promoting sectors that are vital to our future prosperity.

During his visit, Minister Feetham was also honoured to visit the Mexican Senate where he had the privilege of being granted access to the Senate chamber while it was in session conducting official business. During the sitting, he was introduced to a number of Senators, including the President of the Senate, and had the opportunity to observe proceedings from the chamber, an honour which reflected the warmth and generosity extended to him during his visit.

Commenting on the Mexico visit, Minister Feetham said:

“In 2018, Gibraltar was among the first movers in the DLT and digital asset space. By necessity, much of our focus at that time was on building the framework itself and working closely with industry domestically.

“Today, the environment is very different. The conversation has become global. Developments such as the United States’ work on stablecoin legislation, together with evolving international standards, mean that jurisdictions can no longer operate in isolation.

“That is why, over the last six months, I have devoted considerable effort to engaging internationally with policymakers, regulators, industry leaders and market participants. These conversations are essential because digital assets are inherently cross-border. The future of the sector will depend not only on what individual jurisdictions do, but also on how effectively jurisdictions cooperate and how compatible their frameworks become.

“Gibraltar’s influence comes from being an active participant in these international discussions, sharing our experience, learning from others and ensuring that our framework remains connected to the broader global landscape.

“During the conference, I also had the opportunity to update participants on a number of legislative initiatives currently being advanced in Gibraltar and to share some of my work and thinking in the emerging area of prediction markets.

“As we continue to develop our legislative and regulatory framework, it is important that Gibraltar remains at the forefront of international developments and continues to play a constructive role in shaping the future of digital assets.

“I was also especially honoured to have visited the Mexican Senate while it was in session. My sincere thanks to those Senators whom I had the pleasure of meeting for their gracious welcome and hospitality. I greatly appreciated their kindness and openness, and I look forward to building on the friendships and relationships established during my time in Mexico.”
