The John Mackintosh Hall hosted the official opening of two exhibitions, CorUtero by Mark Montovio and Shadows in Bloom by Natasha Cottrell.

The event brought together members of the public, cultural figures, and art enthusiasts to celebrate a diverse exploration of form, emotion, and human experience. CorUtero confronts the complexities of parenting not as an idealised state, but as an evolving process shaped by vulnerability, responsibility, and transformation. Materials are manipulated to evoke both fragility and endurance, mirroring the shifting identities that accompany caregiving. In doing so, the sculptures invite reflection on how nurturing is not confined to biological roles but extends into emotional, psychological, and social dimensions, while Shadows in Bloom offers a reflective visual narrative of mental health struggles through delicate composition and tonal contrast and a genuine desire to be seen and heard challenging the social stigma so prevalent in society.

The dual exhibition was opened jointly by Ministers John Cortes and Pat Orfila, with Minister Orfila introducing Natasha Cottrell’s work and Minister Cortes introducing Mark Montovio’s.

In her address, Pat Orfila refereed to the quality of the work, and the way the artists had portrayed her song emotions. In his address, John Cortes highlighted the importance of artistic expression in fostering dialogue and community engagement within Gibraltar’s cultural landscape and urged both artists to continue doing what they are doing.
