Gibraltar Cultural Services continues to champion cultural education with a series of innovative and hands-on initiatives aimed at bringing Gibraltar’s rich artistic and historical legacy to life for younger generations.

As part of its ongoing commitment to education and outreach, GCS has recently delivered a range of immersive activities involving local schools. Among these was a Street Art Mural Walk for Year 6 students from Bishop Fitzgerald School, offering pupils a guided exploration of Gibraltar’s urban art scene. This was complemented by a visit to the National Gallery with students also learning about the unique Bollard Art Programme, a project inspired by Gibraltar’s diverse history and designed to make public art accessible to all.

In addition to the visual arts, students also engaged in enriching literary sessions. Storytelling events were held at schools featuring the new children's book on Gustavo Bacarisas, written by local author Shane Dalmedo. These sessions introduced young readers to the life and work of one of Gibraltar’s most celebrated artists, presented through an engaging and accessible narrative.

The National Gallery's schools programme further expanded its offering with dynamic workshops that highlight the contributions of renowned Gibraltarian artists Gustavo Bacarisas and Leni Mifsud. Pupils participated in practical activities such as stencil work and printmaking, offering a hands-on approach to art education while deepening their understanding of Gibraltar’s cultural heritage. Stencil work gave an insight into street art paying tribute to some of the Bacarisas murals dotted around Main Street and upper town area. The printing exercise, entertaining, fun and somewhat messy served to highlight the work done by Leni who made postcards using her own carved wooden printing blocks.

These initiatives have been met with enthusiastic participation and positive feedback. They reflect GCS’s dedication to cultivating an appreciation of the arts from an early age, using creative learning methods to inspire the next generation.

A family fun Day at the National Gallery at City Hall on Saturday 5th July will offer activities to the public to include a ‘Sketch n Snack’ session, storytelling, facepainting and other interactive initiatives. Tickets are available from www.buytickets.gi with more information on www.culture.gi
