UPDATE ON FIRE AT BAYSIDE CONSTRUCTION SITE

HM Government of Gibraltar can confirm that emergency services are continuing to respond to a fire at a construction site in the Bayside area.

Approximately 30 firefighters are currently tackling the blaze, with additional support being provided by the Airport Fire and Rescue Service (AFRS). A further 16 fire officers have been called in to provide additional manpower and increase the volume of water being applied to the fire.

The easterly wind is not currently affecting airport operations. However, an aircraft has diverted while AFRS resources assist with the incident. AFRS support provides additional capacity, including specialist equipment should the height of its boom be required.

The fire remains confined to the construction site and there is currently no requirement to evacuate Glacis or surrounding residential areas.

The Director of Public Health has been informed and, as a precaution, residents in the surrounding area are advised to remain indoors where possible, keep windows closed and switch off air conditioning systems until further notice.

The Mayor of La Línea de la Concepción has contacted the Chief Minister to offer assistance from La Línea should it be required. HM Government of Gibraltar is very grateful for this offer of support and solidarity. While this support is not deemed necessary at the moment, communication remains ongoing and support will be requested if necessary.

The situation continues to be actively managed by the emergency services.
