New Bus Stop Signage and Solar-Powered Lighting Rolled Out Across Gibraltar’s Bus Network

HM Government of Gibraltar, together with the Gibraltar Bus Company Limited (GBCL), is pleased to announce two significant improvements to the public bus network: the introduction of a new bus stop signage design, and the completion of a programme to install solar-powered lighting in every bus shelter in Gibraltar.

New bus stop signs have been introduced at various locations across Gibraltar similar in style to those across London. The Ministry continues to promote Gibraltar’s unique Britishness and this initiative is yet another way to do this.

Signs have been installed at key stops including Market Place, Convent Place, British War Memorial, Commonwealth Park, Kingsway, Frontier, Europort, Europa Point, Eastern Beach, Rosia, Catalan Bay, Trafalgar Cemetery, Willis’s Road and Ocean Village.

Solar-powered shelter lighting

All bus shelters across the network are now fitted with solar-charged lighting. Each unit charges during daylight hours and provides illumination through the evening and night, meaning that every shelter in Gibraltar is now lit without the need for a mains electricity connection.

The benefits are immediate and practical:

*  Safety and security — passengers waiting after dark benefit from a well-lit, visible waiting area, and drivers can more easily see waiting passengers.

*  Accessibility — timetables, route maps and service information displayed within shelters are legible at all hours.

*  Sustainability — the units draw no mains power, producing no operational carbon emissions and adding nothing to the Government’s electricity demand.

*  Value for money — solar units avoided the substantial civil works and cabling costs that mains connections would have required at many shelter locations, and carry negligible running costs.

Together, these measures form part of the Government’s continuing programme of investment in public transport, aimed at making the bus network safer, clearer and more attractive to use.
