Ministry of Equality, Employment, Culture and Tourism partners with the Royal Gibraltar Regiment to promote education and rehabilitation at HMP Windmill Hill

The Ministry of Equality, Employment, Culture and Tourism, in partnership with the Royal Gibraltar Regiment and HMP Windmill Hill, has delivered an education and personal development workshop designed to encourage inmates to view education, skills development and lifelong learning as pathways to rehabilitation and future employment through the Ministry's Education, Skills and Work Reintegration Programme.

The initiative originated following discussions between His Excellency the Governor, Sir Ben Bathurst KCVO CBE, Ms Jolene Gomez from the Ministry of Equality, Employment, Culture and Tourism and the Royal Gibraltar Regiment on the importance of exposing inmates to positive role models who have furthered their careers by embracing education which they may have missed out on at school.  Recognising the value of positive role models and lived experience, the Royal Gibraltar Regiment offered to support the Ministry by delivering a workshop focused on resilience, education and personal development.

Entitled From Nothing to Something, the interactive workshop encouraged participants to reflect on the importance of education, perseverance and personal responsibility in achieving positive outcomes. Through discussion, guided reflection and practical coaching exercises, inmates were encouraged to identify their strengths, consider their aspirations and recognise that it is never too late to learn new skills and create opportunities for the future.

The Royal Gibraltar Regiment offers a wide range of educational and professional development opportunities, enabling soldiers to gain nationally recognised qualifications and develop valuable leadership, technical, and vocational skills throughout their service.  Personnel have access to military training, trade-specific courses, adventurous training, and opportunities to pursue civilian accredited qualifications.  These experiences support career progression within the Regiment while equipping soldiers with transferable skills that enhance future employment opportunities beyond military service.

The workshop also highlighted the education opportunities already available at HMP Windmill Hill through the Ministry's Education, Skills and Work Reintegration Programme, encouraging participants to engage with learning as an important step towards successful rehabilitation and reintegration into the community.

The workshop was extremely well received by participants, who engaged positively throughout the session and welcomed the opportunity to reflect on their future aspirations. The feedback received demonstrated the value of initiatives that combine education with positive role models and practical encouragement.
