Ministry For Heritage Launches New Educational History Video Series
The Ministry for Heritage is pleased to announce the launch of a new series of educational videos designed to bring Gibraltar's rich and diverse history to life for audiences of all ages.
Over the past several years, the Ministry has undertaken a wide range of heritage initiatives aimed at documenting, preserving and promoting Gibraltar's history and identity. These have included the installation of interpretation panels across Gibraltar, the creation of historical timelines, the memorialisation of significant Gibraltarians, the recording and promotion of vernacular street names, the conservation of historic sites and monuments, and the development of extensive online heritage resources.
The new video series seeks to build upon this work by transforming much of this research and interpretation into an accessible visual format that can be enjoyed by residents, students, researchers and visitors alike.
The videos will cover a broad range of subjects spanning Gibraltar's history, archaeology, culture, language, people and heritage. They will draw upon the extensive body of work already undertaken by the Ministry for Heritage and will complement the information already available through interpretation panels, heritage trails, educational resources and the Ministry's website.
The aim is to make Gibraltar's history more accessible, engaging and understandable, particularly for younger audiences who increasingly consume educational content through digital platforms. At the same time, the videos will provide an additional resource for teachers, students, researchers and anyone with an interest in Gibraltar's past.
The Ministry envisages this as a long-term educational programme that will progressively explore Gibraltar's history from prehistory to the present day, creating a comprehensive digital library that documents and explains Gibraltar's story in an engaging and accessible manner.
The videos can be accessed through the Ministry for Heritage website and through HMGoG’s official YouTube channel, where future episodes will be released.
Commenting on the initiative, the Minister for Heritage, Professor John Cortes, said:
"Over the years, the Ministry for Heritage has undertaken a significant amount of research, interpretation and public engagement work aimed at promoting Gibraltar's unique history and identity. These new educational videos allow us to bring that work to life in a dynamic and accessible way.
“Whether through our historical timelines, interpretation panels, memorialisation programme, vernacular street name project or wider heritage initiatives, our objective has always been to make Gibraltar's history available to everyone. These videos represent the next stage of that journey.
We hope that residents, students, visitors and history enthusiasts of all ages will enjoy exploring Gibraltar's fascinating story through this new format and develop an even greater appreciation of the people, events and cultures that have shaped our community over thousands of years."
