Gibraltar at the United Nations Exhibition Opens at the Fine Arts Gallery

The Gibraltar National Archives’ new exhibition, Gibraltar at the United Nations 1946–2026, was opened this afternoon by the Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia at the Fine Arts Gallery in Casemates. 

The exhibition marks the 80th anniversary of Gibraltar’s listing as a Non-Self-Governing Territory at the United Nations in 1946 and traces the story of Gibraltar’s relationship with the global governance institution through documents, photographs, correspondence and records held by the Gibraltar National Archives, as well as those that have been submitted by the public.

Opening days after the National Day celebrations, the exhibition explores Gibraltar’s international projection as a distinct and separate people with a unique identity, voice of its own, and aspiration to exercise its right to self-determination through the legitimate demand for a democratic decolonisation and delisting.

The Deputy Chief Minister, the Hon Dr Joseph Garcia MP, said:

The photographs, documents and artefacts presented record the determination of a small people to have their voice heard in the wider world, and ensure that future generations will be able to see the human story behind the international diplomacy. I hope that everyone who visits this exhibition will reflect on the journey it represents and continues to appreciate the importance of working towards a future in which the wishes of the people of Gibraltar remain paramount.”

Gibraltar at the United Nations 1946–2026 is now open until 2nd October 2026 at the Fine Arts Gallery and is free to attend.
