Second cycle launched following success of D Licence Apprenticeship
The Ministry of Equality, Employment, Culture and Tourism and the Ministry for Transport, in collaboration with the Gibraltar Bus Company, are pleased to announce that applications are now open for the second cycle of the D Licence Apprenticeship Programme.
The second cycle follows the successful completion of the inaugural programme, which saw all ten participants obtain their full D Licence and progress into employment with the Gibraltar Bus Company as supply bus drivers, with the opportunity to apply for permanent positions when vacant posts arose.
The apprenticeship provides participants with a structured and paid pathway into the transport sector, combining D Licence theory and practical training with customer care and communication skills, as well as awareness of supported needs and disabilities.
The three-month programme is designed to equip participants with the skills, knowledge and practical experience required to become qualified bus drivers, whilst continuing to strengthen the pool of locally trained drivers available to Gibraltar's public transport service.
Minister for Transport, the Hon Prof John Cortes MP, said:
“I’m delighted that the D Licence Apprenticeship Programme is now available to a further round of applicants, opening up opportunities for fulfilling careers in the Gibraltar Bus Company and simultaneously allowing for the continued improvement and development of the bus service for our community. These are real jobs, for local people, to benefit local people.”
Minister for Employment with responsibility for Training, Apprenticeships and Skills, the Hon Christian Santos GMD MP, said:
“The results of the first cycle demonstrate exactly what we want our apprenticeship programmes to achieve: providing people with practical skills and qualifications and creating a clear pathway into employment. I am pleased that we can now offer this opportunity to a second group of applicants and continue developing local skills in partnership with the Ministry for Transport and the Gibraltar Bus Company.”
The programme is open to applicants who meet the following criteria:
• Must be at least 24 years of age;
• Must meet the eligibility requirements of the applicable Government employment scheme; and
• Must hold a full Class B driving licence with no active convictions or traffic offences. (Note: traffic offences are considered 'spent' two years after sentencing).
Applications must be submitted via the online application form by scanning the QR code attached or accessing the application link.
The deadline for applications is Friday 16th October at 12 noon.
