Ministry of Transport Raises Concerns with Taxi Association on Weekend Service Outage

The Ministry of Transport has raised serious concerns with the Gibraltar Taxi Association regarding the lack of availability of taxis in Gibraltar last weekend.

Government Officials met with the Gibraltar Taxi Association Committee on Monday, requesting an explanation for the failure of service and assurances that any issues would be immediately rectified. The Government reiterated its strong position that residents and visitors are entitled to a reliable taxi service at the frontier, at the airport and across town, at every hour of the day.

The GTA Committee explained that whilst working to implement a new taxi booking app, they failed to transfer their phone lines to the new system before the weekend, which left regular calls to their usual lines unanswered. The Government considers this an unacceptable and entirely avoidable failure of service to their customers.

The Government received assurances from the GTA Committee that this issue has now been rectified and that the new GTA booking app will be offered to customers within the next week. The Government will monitor and assess these improvements and reassurances over the next few weeks whilst it continues looking into the matters raised and is considering every option to make sure the public gets the service it needs, whether that is with the Committee’s improvements or another solution.

Measures under active consideration include:

• the suspension of taxi licences where service requirements are not being met;

• looking at alternative or additional provision if problems persist.

No decision has yet been taken as the Government, in good faith, waits to review the assured improvements proposed by the Gibraltar Taxi Association.

Members of the public who have problems getting a taxi are encouraged to report them directly to the Ministry of Transport by email to mt@gibraltar.gov.gi, giving the date, time and location. These reports will directly inform the service review.

The Minister for Transport, Prof John Cortes, said:

"I understand the frustration felt by customers who are repeatedly reporting problems obtaining taxis and last weekend’s service outage was avoidable and unacceptable. The Government has been investing and working with the GTA to improve the service offering, because Gibraltar needs a taxi service that is there when people need it. We value the work of our taxi drivers and will continue to engage with the GTA Committee, but we must see tangible results. Services to the public must come first, and I am ready to look at every option to make sure that happens."
