Minister Arias-Vasquez welcomes 19 newly qualified Registered Nurses and two Speech and Language Therapists into the GHA

The Minister for Health, Care and Business, the Hon Gemma Arias-Vasquez MP, has congratulated the latest cohort of students who have completed their studies and have now qualified as Registered Nurses and as Speech and Language Therapists.

19 newly qualified nurses have been recruited by the Gibraltar Health Authority, where they will begin their professional careers across a range of services at St Bernard's Hospital and in the community. 18 nurses took up their posts on 13th September 2026, with the remaining nurse commencing in Elderly Residential Services on 20th September.

Two newly qualified Speech and Language Therapists have also been recruited and will take up posts as Junior Speech and Language Therapists within the Gibraltar Health Authority. Both are returning students who completed their degrees outside Gibraltar.

Speech and language therapy has historically been a difficult area to recruit to, both locally and internationally. The appointment of two Gibraltarian therapists strengthens a small but essential service supporting children and adults with communication and swallowing needs and reduces the Authority's reliance on external recruitment.

All of the new recruits were welcomed today by the Minister and the GHA's Director General.

The Government has also established a Healthcare Workforce Strategic Group, which will hold its first meeting later this month. It brings together the Ministry for Health, Care and Business, the Department of Employment, the Department of Education, the Gibraltar Health Authority, the University of Gibraltar and the Care Agency.

The Group has been established in recognition of the significant number of students currently undertaking healthcare-related studies who are expected to return to Gibraltar and qualify over the coming years. Its purpose is to ensure that this emerging pipeline of locally trained professionals is planned for, supported and integrated into Gibraltar's health and care services. Its remit spans nursing and midwifery, allied health professions, pharmacy, medicine, healthcare support roles and relevant social care roles. The Group will meet at least quarterly and will report to the Minister on its findings and recommendations.

The Minister for Health, Care and Business, the Hon Gemma Arias-Vasquez MP, said:

"This is exactly the policy of the Government in action. We are training and recruiting our own people into key roles within the Gibraltar Health Authority. By supporting local students to study nursing and then providing them with opportunities to work in the GHA, we are building a sustainable workforce and investing directly in our people. A significant number of Gibraltarian students are currently studying towards healthcare qualifications and will return home over the next few years. We have a responsibility to plan properly for that, which is why we have established the Healthcare Workforce Strategic Group, meeting for the first time this month. Workforce planning of this kind has to be done years ahead, not months ahead, and it has to be done jointly. I am proud of each of these new Registered Nurses and look forward to seeing them thrive in their careers."
