HM Customs Gibraltar Welcomes St Joseph’s School Pupils for an Exciting Educational Open Day

HM Customs Gibraltar was delighted to welcome Year 6 pupils from St Joseph’s School for a special open day, giving them a fun and engaging opportunity to discover more about the work of HM Customs and the people who help keep Gibraltar safe.

The visit was filled with exciting activities, demonstrations and hands-on experiences, allowing the pupils to get a closer look at the varied roles and responsibilities of HM Customs officers. The day began with a presentation from the Dog Section, where the pupils had the opportunity to meet detector dog Stitch and learn about the important role dogs play in detecting prohibited and illicit substances. Stitch proved to be a big hit with the children, who thoroughly enjoyed seeing him in action. They then explored some of the specialist equipment used by HM Customs, taking part in a hands-on demonstration of the underwater drone used to search the hulls and undersides of vessels. They were also introduced to maritime charts, radio communications and other operational equipment.

The pupils were given an insight into the personal protection equipment used by officers, including handcuffs and batons, and learned some basic ropework skills. There was also an opportunity to put their detective skills to the test during a vehicle-search exercise, where they were challenged to find hidden bags of sweets. The activity brought plenty of excitement as the pupils experienced, first- hand, some of the techniques used by Customs officers in their daily work. However, the highlight of the day was undoubtedly a trip aboard HM Customs’ departmental vessels, HMC Searcher and HMC Sentinel. The opportunity to step aboard the vessels and experience a little of HM Customs’ maritime operations proved to be a memorable experience for the young visitors.

Throughout the day, the pupils showed great enthusiasm, curiosity and interest, asking some excellent questions and making the most of every activity. HM Customs Gibraltar was pleased to host the pupils and provide them with an opportunity to learn, explore and experience aspects of the service that they might not ordinarily get to see. Visits such as these are a wonderful way to strengthen the relationship between HM Customs and Gibraltar’s schools, helping young people learn more about the important work carried out in their community. HM Customs would like to thank the staff and pupils of St Joseph’s School for visiting and for making the day such an enjoyable and rewarding experience for everyone involved.
