People have been left bemused by the opposition's decision to abstain in last week's vote on The Police Bill (2006), which sets up the new Police Authority.
The opposition had argued the bill needed more time to allow for proper consultation and ammenments and if this didn't happen, they would have to abstain. Critics rounded on the opposition for failing to vote against the bill rather than abstain by which they effectively allowed the free passage of the bill through the House of Assembly.
Politicans are elected to use their vote wisely, it seems odd that on such a critical issue and with obvious concerns about the bill, the opposition failed to use their vote, choosing simply to take a position of sitting on the fence.
