NURSING SECTION OUTRAGE

" Now unilaterally and without informing the Union the Government has broken this agreement."

The G.H.A. Nursing Section Committee of Unite the Union wants to make public its disapproval and outrage at the Government’s and Elderly Care Agency’s decision to breach the agreement reached between the Union and these two bodies in relation to wages and conditions of employment in the year 2000.

As a result of the demise of the former John Mackintosh Trust that used to manage Mount Alvernia and the Jewish Home, Government Ministers with Senior Management of the E.C.A. negotiated a new pay and conditions agreement with our union T.G.W.U. at the time. It was agreed that Nursing Staff in the E.C.A. would be analogued to those of the G.H.A. (parity of wages with G.H.A.).  This agreement has been in existence and fulfilled in all its part for the past 10 years.  Now unilaterally and without informing the Union the Government has broken this agreement.

Today our community recognises the improvement in the delivery of care given to our elderly citizens. This Excellence in care is not only the result of a greater investment in the service but also the direct result of the commitment of its hard working staff.

Therefore, the Nursing Section Committee feels committed to support our colleagues in the Care Agency and will consider in whatever shape and manner to put pressure on the Government to honour negotiated agreements.
