PDP spokeswoman,Moira Walsh, says in her statement that the Party fully supports the naming of two streets in Gibraltar after Bishop Caruana and Bishop Devlin. These were two much loved Gibraltarians who dedicated their lives to public and community service and it is right they should be honoured in this way.Adding that,'the Government has suggested the re-naming of Cannon Lane as Bishop Devlin Lane and the naming of one of the new streets by the mid-Harbour reclamation as Bishop Caruana Road. The PDP are in favour of the naming of new streets or avenues after these two respected Bishops leaving untouched the names of streets whose name are historic in nature and reflect our heritage. Given the extent of development around Gibraltar it should be relatively easy to find suitable locations for this.
'Additionally the PDP are not in favour of the re-naming of Devil’s Tower Road as the rather non-descript “North Front Avenue.” The Government suggested in its press release that this was because of a slight realignment in the road. There is, however, historical significance to that name. Devil’s Tower Road is named after the tower which formed part of the defences mentioned in the Treaty of Utrecht as part of the forts and fortifications ceded under the treaty. In fact it was captured during the 1727 siege by Spain and returned to Gibraltar after the peace treaty.
'Additionally any pointless re-naming of Devil’s Tower Road or Cannon Lane will lead to inconvenience of residents who will have to change their addresses on utility bills, banks, insurances and countless other documents and correspondence. Businesses will have to get customers to re-direct correspondence to a new address and reprint stationery with the new address. The Government should reconsider whether this is necessary as it serves no apparent purpose at all in the case of Devil’s Tower Road and in the case of Cannon Lane this inconvenience could simply be cancelled by ensuring that the laudable aim of naming a street after Bishop Devlin is catered for elsewhere.'
