Following the presentation made at the Media Forum during the course of the Money Fair in Berlin participants were invited to attend the unveiling of a newly sculpted effigy of the Queen which has been used in an additional series of coins to be issued in commemoration of Her Majesty’s 90th birthday.

The coins are unique in that they will consist of coins which will show in each one a different effigy of Her Majesty the Queen used in previous years and previous coins.  A picture of the coins is attached.  In addition one coin consists of a half crown which is the coin which existed pre decimalisation when the pound consisted of a shillings and pence.  That coin shows an earlier effigy of a younger queen which was on contemporary coins of the time.  The other coins will be one crown which would have been five shillings pre decimalisation or 25 pence under the present system.

The partner marketing the coins for the Government, Samlerhuset, are confident that there will be very large demand for this particular set of coins which will be issued against the background of the many celebrations that are being held in the UK to commemorate Her Majesty’s 90th birthday.

As a result of the many visits to the enlarged Gibraltar stand this year there was an increased level of Sales of Notes and Coins to collectors, and preliminary discussions with a number of distributors in Europe and elsewhere.

Minister Bossano said “Last year was the first year that Gibraltar National Mint took a stand at the Exhibition and because of the initial interest that we found we decided to double the space that we took.  That decision proved to be a wise one as the level of interest and number of contacts that we have made to increase the sales of Gibraltar coins and notes has been very worthwhile and well beyond our expectations.”
