The Iklyle Cultural Centre in Tetouan was the setting for the opening of a major photographic exhibition celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Gibraltar Photographic Society.

Organised by the Ministry for Developing Relations with the Kingdom of Morocco, the exhibition attracted a large audience and brought together photographers, artists, cultural representatives, and dignitaries from across northern Morocco.

The exhibition was officially opened remotely by Minister John Cortes, who highlighted the important role that photography plays in fostering cultural understanding, preserving heritage, and building connections between communities. His address emphasised the value of creative exchanges between Gibraltar and Morocco and the enduring ties that unite people on both sides of the Strait.

Marking six decades of photographic excellence, the exhibition showcased nearly 70 images produced by 25 members of the Gibraltar Photographic Society. The collection reflected a remarkable diversity of styles, subjects, and approaches, ranging from landscapes and wildlife to portraiture, street photography, and creative artistic interpretations. Several of the exhibiting photographers travelled to Tetouan to attend the opening, providing visitors with an opportunity to engage directly with the artists and discuss their work.

The event generated considerable interest among attendees, who praised both the quality and variety of the photographs on display. The exhibition provided a platform not only for artistic appreciation but also for dialogue, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas between photographers and cultural practitioners from Gibraltar and Morocco.

The evening concluded with a performance by a traditional Moroccan orchestra, whose music provided a fitting celebration of the rich cultural heritage shared across the region. The concert added a vibrant and festive dimension to the occasion, reinforcing the spirit of friendship and cultural exchange that characterised the event.

Mark Montovio, representing the Ministry at the event, welcomed the success of the exhibition and the strong attendance from across northern Morocco. The event demonstrated how the arts can serve as a bridge between communities, bringing people together through shared creativity, mutual respect, and a common appreciation for culture.

Minister for Developing Relations with Morocco, the Hon Prof John Cortes said:

"Celebrating both the achievements of the Gibraltar Photographic Society over the past sixty years and the growing cultural relationship between Gibraltar and Morocco, the exhibition stands as a testament to the power of artistic collaboration to connect people across borders and strengthen ties across the Strait of Gibraltar. I am very grateful to Leslie Linares and Caroline Abrines and the whole of the Gibraltar Photographic Society for their work on this. A very fitting way to continue to celebrate their sixtieth year”.
