On 23 May 2019 there is the possibility that there will be European Parliamentary elections and the Gibraltar Regulatory Authority has published a revised Code of Standards for television and radio programmes.

Under section 7(1) of the European Parliamentary Elections Act 2004 the GRA has a statutory duty to draw up, and from time to time review and revise, a code setting the standards to be observed for programmes to be included in television and radio services in relation to European Parliamentary elections. This code sets those standards and will regulate broadcasters of television and radio services in Gibraltar.

The European Parliamentary Elections Act 2004 requires the GRA to set standards in order to secure that programmes included in television and radio services are presented with accuracy and due impartiality as respects matters of political controversy or relating to current public policy. It must also set standards in order to ensure that programmes included in television and radio services do not give undue prominence to the views and opinions of particular persons and bodies in relation to matters of political controversy and current public policy.

A second document published by the GRA contains guidelines for handling complaints.

Under section 11 of the European Parliamentary Elections Act 2004 the GRA must establish procedures for the handling and resolution of complaints about the observance of the code of standards set under section 7(1) of that Act. This second document outlines those procedures.

The documents are available on the GRA’s website:
