The Royal Gibraltar Police has organised a cycle run from Faro to Gibraltar in aid of local charities. The event will take place between 6-10th November 2018.

Under the banner of “It’s coming home” a dozen police officers will be setting off from the Estadio Algarve, where the Gibraltar Football Association has been hosting its home international games until recently. The grueling 500 kilometre event will take the cyclists between four to five days to complete.

The cyclists will be kitted out in proper blue and white cycling jerseys with the letters RGP emblazoned across front and back, and the badges of the RGP and GFA.

The GFA is the main sponsor of the event and local business Blands will be providing the transport for the twelve cyclists heading to Portugal. Bicycle shops Ciclo Collado from La Linea and Bike Zoo Gibraltar are also providing technical assistance for the event.

On their return they will be riding to Casemates to collect funds and will be making an appearance at Gibraltar’s UEFA Nations League match versus Armenia, with a lap of honour at the Victoria Stadium ahead of kick off.

Organiser PC Donovan Galia said that cycling had become a very popular sport among police officers in Gibraltar.

He said: “The sport has taken off in a big way with the police force and we thought it would be a good idea to combine the cycle run with a fund raising event. We are grateful to the sponsors for their support in making the Faro run possible.

Commissioner Ian McGrail added: “The RG Police is keen to involve itself with charity and community events and this is a perfect example of the type of initiatives that we wish to encourage our officers to pursue.

The cyclists involved will be undertaking a tough and strenuous sporting challenge for a worthwhile cause and we thank them for their efforts and spirited attitude.

For his part GFA General Secretary, Dennis Beiso, said: "We are very pleased to be able to support the RGP with this excellent initiative. It will no doubt be a tough task for the cyclists and we wish them a safe and successful venture. We particularly like the symbolism of undertaking a journey from the Estadio do Algarve to the Victoria Stadium - a journey our players and fans have been very familiar with. We look forward to the cyclists receiving a warm Gibraltarian welcome when they finally cycle into a full stadium before Gibraltar plays Armenia on the 16th November".
