The main party set to represent Gibraltar at the XXI Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast, Australia, left the Rock today.

Team Gibraltar will be competing in seven sports, Athletics, Cycling, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Shooting, Squash, Swimming and Triathlon with the Games themselves starting on 4th of April. Gibraltar compete on all but one of the 12 days of competition.

Chef de Mission Brian Buckley and General Team Manager Linda Alvarez left the Rock on Thursday to prepare Gibraltar’s allocated accommodation and begin familiarising ahead of the main contingent.

CDM Brian Buckley commented before his departure “The hard work the athletes have put in reaching the minimum consideration standard will hopefully be a springboard to a successful showing at the 2018 games. Whilst medals may be out of reach, National Records and personal bests will be high on the agenda”.

GTM Linda Alvarez added “The officials have also been working hard, albeit behind the scenes to help deliver a great games for Team Gibraltar”.

Gibraltar Commonwealth Games Association President Harry Murphy and Secretary General Joe Schembri will also be in Australia, as will Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia, Sports Minister Steven Linares and Sports and Leisure Authority CEO Reagan Lima.
