Government have announced a new street art initiative as part of its urban regeneration and cultural development programmes.

The aim is to revitalise areas that require redevelopment and attempt to improve the physical appeal of building façades. It is a popular form of public art probably best understood by seeing it in situ.

Gibraltar Cultural Services on behalf of the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Heritage, Environment and Climate Change, have been tasked with overseeing these art projects.

GCS have revealed that five areas in Gibraltar have been identified, subject to the guidance and advice of the Development and Planning Commission. These include:

• Irish Town/Chatham Counterguard tunnel

• Alameda Gardens tunnel

• Europort Avenue

• Ragged Staff Magazine

• Fountain Ramp

The art projects and creation of street murals are geared for local artists, and the Government hopes that the local art fraternity will get involved. Applications and further details will be released after the meeting of the DPC, in October.
