Commonwealth Games Association of Gibraltar President Harry Murphy and Secretary General Joe Schembri have today attended the launch of the Queens Baton Relay.

The ceremony was held within the grounds of Buckingham Palace where H.M. The Queen personally inserted a message to all athletes of the Commonwealth. This message will be read at the opening ceremony of the 2018 Gold Coast games, the next edition of the games set to be held in April 2018.

The baton will travel to all seventy one nations and territories of the Commonwealth before arriving in the Gold Coast prior to the start of the Games.  

Harry and Joe will also be attending an official reception at Australia House today, hosted by His Excellency the Honourable Alexander Downer AC High Commissioner for Australia to the United Kingdom and Mr. Ken Smith Agent General for Queensland to celebrate the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Speaking on the events Secretary General Joe Schembri said “It’s an honour to be able to represent Gibraltar on these occasions where the diversity of the Commonwealth comes to the fore to celebrate the countdown to another games.” He added “it’s amazing to think its just a over a year to the games”.  

The Queens baton will be in Gibraltar in September and already preparations are well under way to make the visit a memorable occasion for everyone.
