The Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, met with the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan at City Hall in London on Wednesday.

The meeting had been arranged to discuss the synergies between the position of London and Gibraltar after the European Union referendum. Registered voters in both London and Gibraltar voted for the United Kingdom and Gibraltar to remain within the EU.

The discussion reflected the historic links between Gibraltar and London generally and in particular the strong commercial links with the City going back centuries and especially evident today in the field of Financial Services.

The Chief Minister said: "I really enjoyed meeting Sadiq Khan and to have the chance to discuss with him the issues that London and Gibraltar respectively face in the aftermath of the Brexit result. There are many similarities in the issues that we face, although of course for London the scale of matters is clearly greater. Sharing views and aspirations will nonetheless be an important part of how relevant political decision makers shape the best future for the United Kingdom and Gibraltar in each jurisdiction and it is a pleasure to have been exposed to the clear thinking and drive which characterise Sadiq Khan and his team. Financial Services is hugely important to London and to Gibraltar and we have agreed to stay in touch and work together on how the future for that industry can be fashioned after of the result of the EU referendum. Gibraltar's Financial Services industry has traditionally been intrinsically tied up with London's and will no doubt continue to successfully be linked in similar fashion in the future. With strong leadership in London and the United Kingdom the post Brexit future will bring new opportunities to work with and does not need to be disconnected from Europe and am I am sure that the international, cross jurisdictional and cross party support for Gibraltar that we are building will enable us to deal with the many challenges that the coming weeks and months will undoubtedly throw at us."
