The Gibraltar Port Authority has announced that its latest recruit has successfully qualified as a VTS Operator following an extensive period of training in the UK.

Kaylan Catania was appointed as a trainee VTS Operator in April and attended the South Tyneside College near Newcastle in April and May for a rigorous 7-week course which provided his VHF radio, radar and VTS training before his final assessment by the college at the end of May.

Kaylan is now fully qualified to operate in the VTS operations room, and joins his other colleagues maintaining the 24 hour coverage of BGTW ensuring the navigational safety of vessel movements in and around the coast of Gibraltar.

The Minister for Traffic, Transport & Technical Services, the Hon Paul Balban, said: “Congratulations Kaylan, on your achievement and on behalf of the Government I wish you a long and happy career with the VTS. Offering these professional development opportunities to our recruits reinforces the Government’s commitments both to our staff and to maintaining the highest standards of safety in our very busy waters. The two go hand-in-hand.
