The Minister for the Environment and Climate Change, Dr John Cortes, and senior members of the Department of the Environment and Climate Change, Chief Executive Dr Liesl Torres and Senior Scientific Officer Stephen Warr yesterday participated, via Skype, in a meeting of the Environmental Committee of the Falkland Islands Government.

The Gibraltar team made a presentation on Gibraltar’s environmental strategies, especially in relation to mitigation and adaptation to climate change, including such aspects as renewable energy and energy efficiency. This was followed by a question and answer session.

The Ministry for the Environment and Climate Change in Gibraltar has regular Skype exchanges with senior Falkland Island officials but this is the first time these discussions has involved the full Falkland Islands Environmental Committee.

This is part of a wider initiative, commenced last July at the UK Overseas Territories Environment Ministers’ meeting held in Gibraltar, which is leading to greater communication and exchanges on environmental matters between the Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies. The next such Ministerial meeting is scheduled to be hosted by the Government of Montserrat in November.
