Time was called on the latest edition of the Youth Commonwealth Games last Sunday with a sense of mission accomplished for Team Gibraltar.

The Games in The Bahamas saw over one thousand young athletes from across the Commonwealth participate in athletics, road cycling, judo, swimming, beach volleyball and beach soccer, rugby 7s, boxing and tennis.

Team Gibraltar competed in swimming and athletics with five swimmers and an athlete representing the Rock in the Caribbean.

Although no medals were won or finals made the squad performed admirably producing a string of personal bests with perhaps the stand out performance coming from swimmer Matt Savitz who broke two national records in the pool.

Swim coach Mellisa Holland leading the swim team at her first major games was understandably proud on her young charges.  "Proud! …. There’s not much more I can say, they left everything at the pool each day which is all I can ask of them, my dad (Joe Santos) has echoed that”.

The team was led by Linda Alvarez, who is no stranger to big sporting events as president of the Gibraltar Island Games Association. But this was a first for her on the Commonwealth stage. President of the Gibraltar Association Harry Murphy and the General Secretary Joe Schembri were also across the pond attending a CGF seminar and were always on hand for guidance and support.

The next step for Team Gibraltar is to prepare for the Commonwealth Games held in the Gold Coast, Australia in 2018. More info can be found here  http://commonwealthgames.com.au/
