Team Snooker League: Game 8.
The first game of the second round of the GBSA Team Snooker League was played out around Gibraltar on the Wednesday of last week.
In the middle of town, at the St Bernard's Catholic, Social Club, the St Bernard's team got themselves in a right muddle - snooker wise that is!
Mukesh Bakhru got them off to a great start, beating Elio Monteverde 61-24. Then next up Peter Bensadon got himself in a frame winning position at 36-24 on the green ball. Opponent, Adrian Navarro, thought differently! Adrian took the green, brown and blue to level at 36 all. Peter got the pink only for Adrian to forget to lie down! He went and took the black ball and the frame 44-42!!
Adrian was a worthy star man for the Astoria.
A game to remember and one all in frames.
Harry Ward next came up against in-form Keith Correa. Keith toughed it out to beat Harry 46-22 and put the Astoria boys in the lead! Adrian Holmes was at the table with Alain Gatt and in no mood to mess about. He continued his potting form of late and beat Alain 70-38.
Two all and the whole game to play for, when Adrian Wink met the Astoria's captain, Brian Garcia. In a constrained, tight game both players made some very good safe shots and some beautiful pots neck and neck down the reds. Brian led 36-29 on the last three reds. Adrian took two of them with blacks to go 9 ahead. Brian got the last red and decided to tuck up behind the pink - a very careful shot. He missed by less than another coat of lacquer and went on to concede three more fouls to some magnificent snookering by Adrian, who now led 27. Brian got the yellow but Adrian responded with the green and brown to take the frame 70-38, the man-of-the-match and the game three two! A good four points to the saints, but the second fright in eight days from the boys of the Astoria R&F Club!
Up in the Astoria R&F Club, on Flat Bastion, the Astoria Too team were up against barentertainment.net.
‘Titch' Olivero played Yewhung Chin (someone has to!).
Yewhung won 66-14 and did not pass his recently established highest break of 61! Well tried ‘Titch'!
Antonio Cavilla, often a key player for the Astoria, was beaten by a solidly in-form, entertainer's man-of-the-match, Francis Becerra 16-72.
The Astoria's star man, Dougie Cooper, showed how to do it by beating Laurence Sisarello 51-29; only to see Albert Goldwin go down 34-69 to another in-form entertainer, Nicky Correa. The fourth frame was lost when Dave Smith came up against yet another player on-form. Sean Galligan beat Dave 56-8, to take the frame and the game four frames to one! A great five points to increase an already commanding lead.
Way further north, on Devils Tower Road, the Cue Ball team took on the Mediterranean Rowing Club and yet again the third placed team came a cropper!
Cue Ball's star man, Ernest Clinton, beat Peter Buttigieg senior 74-33, to level the score. Lee Wheatley beat John-Joe Alvez 58-22 to restore the lead, only for Gary Hall to find himself blind-sided! Gary played Peter Buttigieg junior and was just 7 behind when Peter cleared brown to black (22 points) to take the frame 63-34; again the scores were level. The crunch frame was Ian McIntosh and the original captain courageous, Peter Valarino. Once again Peter proved himself the Med's man-of-the-match. He beat Ian 65-28, to take the match and the extra point three frames to two.
The fourth game between the GSP and Team Queensway was postponed when the GSP could not field a team.
