Shadow Minister for Sport (Acting) Steven Linares has said that Gibraltar can be very proud of the second place trophy achieved by the under 11 team of Lincoln Newcastle Football Club at an international tournament in Barcelona last weekend.
The Opposition attaches considerable importance to Gibraltar teams participating in international tournaments of this kind. This is good for the sportspeople involved but it is also good for Gibraltar as a whole.
Commenting on the matter, Steven Linares said:
“We are delighted that the youngsters of Lincoln Newcastle Football Club performed so well in competing against teams from a number of European countries. It is also very important that they were awarded the Best Fair Play trophy, which reflects very well on all those who took part.”
Mr Linares added: “It is fortunate that our young footballers can do so well at this level even though the GFA continues to be so unfairly excluded from UEFA due to the manipulations of the Spanish Government through the Spanish Football authorities. It will be recalled that the rules of UEFA were changed in order to exclude Gibraltar. The Opposition look forward to the day when our footballers, young and old, are able to enjoy the full benefits that UEFA membership will bring them.”
