Scar Tissue - Anthony Kiedis with Larry Sloman

Drug addiction, sex and reckless mischief are the main topics in this simple but candidly written biography.

Having spent most of his days in a drug induced stupor, Kiedis has produced a surprisingly detailed account of his life. Though at times he merely touches the surface of topics I would have liked to have known more about, like his music-writing process, and the effect his best friend's overdose death had on him, his honesty, frankness and raw sincerity prove to make a very interesting and ironically 'addictive' read. Simply put, this is basically a recount of his life, from his own perspective, without feeling the need to cover every little detail relating to the band. Anyone expecting a biography of the Red Hot Chili Peppers might be a little disappointed, as this it is not. This is his story, his struggle with his own personal demons, the demise of most of his relationships through betrayal and infidelity, and how unprepared he was for his rise to fame.

Every page turns out to be interesting, from his introduction right through to the very end. The photographs supplied are very personal and you find yourself flipping back to study them often, especially when they relate to that particular stage in his life you might be reading about at the time.

Not a lot of dialogue is offered, more of a 'he said' 'I said' basis, and to sum it all up, it basically is a 'this happened'..'then this happened' type of story, but the manner in which Kiedis relates all this is remarkable.

He appears to be very philosophical about his experiences, and maintains an extremely positive hindsight about it all. At times though he can come across as a self-absorbed and remorseless juvenile delinquent, destructive to those around him, but I never felt I disliked him at any point. To be honest I found his sincerity rather admirable, and was amused by the thought of whether his 'subjects' would have been made aware of his confessions prior to publication. In fact, I have come to appreciate him more now.

Whether you're a fan of the Chili's or not, you will definitely enjoy reading this.

I would say this book is all about Blood, Sugar, Sex and Magik - Unputdownable !

RRRR
