True to form threats are emanating from Spain that if Gibraltar’s new Constitution in any way alters Gibraltar’s international status Spain will break the Cordoba agreement. This unsurprising news came just about 40 days after they signed the agreement with all the pomp and ceremony that made up part of the event at Sr. Moratino’s Spain’s Foreign Secretary’s home town. Do Gibraltarians have to repeat their usual suspicions that any agreement signed by Spain is not worth the paper it is written on.

Why do a lot of our leading political and commercial personalities make such a song and dance about anything discussed and agreed with Spanish Institutions, with the exception of Los Barrios of course, when they well know the dangers? These friends of Spain should always and in advance express their concern about Spain regular dishonesty and hypocrisy.

Unfortunately the same standards are reflected in most, if not all, agreements signed by Spain’s reaction to the possible internationalisation of the new Constitution is yet another instance confirming that our neighbours, except Los Barrios, cannot be trusted to keep their word.

That these threats should come from an official body and which have not been denied by Sr. Moratinos is quite surprising but does not surprise most of us in Gibraltar. It only saddens us. We have had so much of the same over the last fifty years of dictatorship and of so called democracy.

In the adult version of diplomacy keeping ones word and adhering to negotiated and signed agreements is the sine qua non of political honesty. There are nations and states in the third and fourth world which in the past years were taught and brought up to recognise and stick to decent and acceptable standards. These are still a lesson to some European Union States. Everyone who is “au fait” the political world knows that there is more than one European State which don’t keep to their word and which particular States these are.

Petulance and total dishonesty is the hallmark of those that might be at a disadvantage or on the losing side and irrespective of the number of “red cards” shown to them will never ever abide by the acceptable rules of decency.

Will these States ever learn that honesty and keeping ones word is always the best policy if only to gain respect and disarm opponents. Dishonesty only breeds contempt and lengthens the time to recover and regain respect.

Those who behave like diplomatic delinquents will rightly be treated as political juveniles, who despite trumpeting their so called democratic credentials, have yet to learn the rules of the true democratic system.

Gibraltar should devote its energies in its own interests in our usual honest and efficient manner and not take much notice or put our faith in anything that sounds good from our neighbours.

We will always survive as we have in the past.

MONEY BUSINESS
Gibraltar should be in the UNESCO biodiversity programme joining the Campo Nature Reserve and the Alcornocales Nature Park. So suggests the Partido Popular mancomunidad spokesman Alejandro Sanchez.

Good idea. Gibraltar should certainly be included but first of all Gibraltar should meet certain standards. Whoever is responsible should get rid of a very large number of apes which are akin to vermin and bring the ever increasing and destructive packs down to manageable levels as was the case when Fortress Headquarters was in charge or is it that the Apes only started breeding when the Civils took over.

These wild animals may be cute to some people but not to others with a bit of sense. If not ask the people of Catalan Bay who are affected by the disgusting habits of these animals which have become scavengers and vermin tearing up and spreading household rubbish in many areas. If you don’t believe this just visit Catalan Bay in the evenings and see for yourself. What the Caleteňos have to put up with.

It is all very well for the sandals and bearded brigade to keep on spouting about the richness and diversity of the flora and fauna from candytuft to escarabajos so long as the law abiding and tax paying citizens are protected from the filthy and disgusting habits of the apes which incidentally are dangerous and a gross nuisance creating a health hazard wherever they are.

How about a huge cull for a change.

Less talk and more action.

SUBSIDIES
Here we go again. The monthly contribution which the State pays to all municipalities in this case La Linea has been suspended at 100%. Why for? La Linea headed by the Mayor Clown Juarez, who has the dubious honour of heading a Bankrupt Municipality which has massive debts, has not paid municipal staff, Income Tax or Social Security payments to the state since, WAIT FOR IT since 1999. When his GIL Party now Popular Party came into power.

The monthly subsidy due to La Linea is 1.2 million Euros but will not be paid until the debt of around 80 million Euros is cleared or an acceptable repayment plan is submitted.

Obviously there is concern about the monthly payment of municipal staff salaries which is never paid on its due date.

IN THE RED
To add to all of Jump on the Bandwagon Juarez’s troubles, the covered municipal swimming pool, described as the best in Spain and one of the best in Europe, has been closed for almost 2 years since it was finally finished. Why? Simply because Clown Juarez can’t fork out 540 000 Euros which is the Municipal contribution towards the cost of 1.4m Euros total cost.
That’s not all around the 20 November the Municipality of La Linea will be without a Fire Brigade Service because it owes the consortium more than a million Euros. 1.2 million to be precise.

Juarez owes more than a million Euros to the Municipal cleaning company as well.
Will he have to fork out some Euros for the new road network at La Linea to comply with traffic fluidity at the Frontier?

Or will that be paid by someone else? Whoever it is who has to pay they had better keep a tight control of the purse and not let the La Linea Mayor get his hands on it or put his fingers in it.
