Jazz Friends Trio
Last Thursday 13th December 2007 a packed O'Callaghan Eliott were treated to a selection of boleros, jazz standards and Christmas carols continuing the festive mood. The veranda bar was filled with the sound of beautiful harmonies greatly appreciated and warmly applauded by the audience.
The band for the night was the ‘Jazz Friends Trio' with Atsuko Shimada on piano, Louis Chipolina on electric bass and Norman Tonna on drums and vocals. They were joined by John Levy on tenor sax, Steve Izzard on guitar and Noel Yates on guitar; a fine blend of musicians carrying technique, talent and experience.
The group opened the first set of the evening with that popular standard entitled ‘Come Fly with Me' with Norman holding a steady beat while he featured on vocals. Norman went on to sing a Luis Miguel special, ‘Como Fue?' to warm applause. It was then time for an instrumental with Atsuko's choice for ‘Like Someone in Love' with John Levy blending in with fine solos and Louis swinging away with fine bass-lines. Noel joined the trio for the next one, another vocal ‘A Foggy Day in London Town' with John and Noel taking the solos. Steve Izzard then joined the band for ‘Stella by Starlight' and ‘Moon River' closing the first part of the evening with a very appropriate ‘Let It Snow'.
After the break the trio was back with Noel and John joining them for a few vocal tunes with Norman starring on ‘Just in Time', ‘How Insensitive' and a bolero; another Luis Miguel favourite one ‘Contigo Aprendi'. A Herbie Hancock composition ‘Maiden Voyage' was next with Atsuko showing her true colours laying down superb statements on the ivories and John also blowing out classy phrasings on tenor. Norman and Louis provided a swinging groove with Louis also soloing in his unique melodic style. It was then time for the last one of the evening in the shape of a blues with Noel and Steve on guitars and John joining in to say good night to the crowd of excellent listeners. Another excellent evening with plenty of variety and good entertainment thoroughly enjoyed by all.
