A Night of Bubbling Jazz
Last Thursday at the O’Callaghan Eliott Hotel’s packed veranda bar it was a night of bubbling jazz with a large number of guest musicians joining the fun. The trio for the evening saw Stik Cook on piano, Ivan Israel on drums, George Posso on double bass and Nicky Gonzalez on sax.

Guest musicians for the night included Mitch Jansen on trumpet, Chris Riley on sax, Shane from Ireland on drums, Mathew from Geneva also on drums, Juan Galiardo on piano, Atsuko Shimada on piano and Jose Lopez on double bass and drums. Shane is a professional drummer in Ireland and although he claimed that he had never played jazz before he proved to be a superb drummer, laying down excellent drumming in his sit-in.

Jose Lopez is from Cadiz and is a well known and highly respected musician around Southern Spain as he doesStikStik quite a bit of session work for top musicians in the area. He is also one of the teachers in the Cadiz School of Modern and Jazz Music.

Elie Massias also joined in for his last performance before flying back to NY.
It was a night with many changes in line up with the trio of Stik, Ivan and George starting off with a selection of tunes which included a John Coltrane tune entitled “Naima” and “All The Things You Are” with Nicky stepping in on a funky “Summertime” followed by “On Green Dolphin Street” with Chris Riley on alto sax.

Ivan IsraelJuan Galiardo was the next one to join in, taking over on piano with Chris still on sax and Shane on drums to play “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” with Nicky and Mitch joining in on solos and closing melody. Jose Lopez took over on double bass, giving George a break to play “Mack the Knife” with Juan still on piano. Stik came back on piano and joined Jose to play “How Deep Is the Ocean” with Ivan back on drums.

By this time there would have normally been a break but not this time as all the available time had to be used so that none of the musicians were left out. The appreciative audience were thrilled with excited gave wild applause throughout the evening.

Atsuko came on next with Jose still on double bass featuring on a tune entitled “Stella by Starlight” with Stik taking over on double bass next to play “There is No Greater Love”.

Juan then took to the ivories again with Stik on bass to play “Have You Met Miss Jones”.Atsuko

JuanGeorge came back on bass with Stik on piano and young Mathew from Geneva on drums to play “Nostalgia in Times Square” with Nicky on sax. Elie was on next and joined by Chris on alto sax they played “Billie’s Bounce” followed by a request for a Miles Davis favourite entitled “All Blues” with Mitch and Nicky also joining in. Jose was back on double bass for the last one; a Herbie Hancock one entitled “Cantaloupe Island” with Juan on piano Elie, Mitch, Nicky Chris and Ivan on drums bringing the evening to a fabulous ending.

The crowd cried out for more but it was way past finishing time so the musicians said good night and took off.

Jazz continues on Saturday at Café Solo with Anselmo on sax, Atsuko Shimada on piano, Louis Chipolina on bass and Norman Tonna on drums and vocals.
